Feeling like you want to splash a little bit more money on new LEGO sets for your collection? We recently published a blog post on ‘The Best Cheap Lego Sets – LEGO Sets Under £20’, but if you’re looking for a little bit more of a building experience then you might want to spend a little bit more money on a LEGO set.
In this blog post we’re going to look at LEGO sets between the £20 and £50 price points. These are likely to be your medium sets with a huge variety of minifigures and more substantial builds which you might spend a couple of hours putting together. In order to do this justice, I have picked a handful of sets from different licenses and brands which fit this price bracket and feel ‘cool’ to me!
Keep in mind that this blog post is my opinion. There might be sets out there which you prefer and that is totally fine, but equally, if you’re someone who feels a little bit indecisive then this might be the guide for you. Let’s dive in!
Bonsai Tree
Kicking off this section is a return to The Botanical Collection – and if it isn’t obvious by this point, I am a big fan of what LEGO have done with this line. The Bonsai Tree LEGO released as a part of this line is simply gorgeous. It uses unique building techniques and smart part choices to create a beautiful build which is incredibly aesthetically pleasing. This is something which would work equally well in a crowded LEGO display or a minimalist home setup, and that is why it makes this list!
Succulents
A second choice from The Botanical Collection might seem extreme, but here me out on this one! When researching this article, the Succulents set took my breath away. The set utilises 771 pieces to create a range of Succulent flowers, but what I love is how smart some of the part choices are in this build. There are egg pieces recoloured and used as foliage on one plant, and pieces traditionally used for claws on animals or features on buildings also featured here. This is the creativity of LEGO captured in an incredible way, and is the kind of unique set I think fans looking for something different will love!
Elphaba & Glinda Figures
My next selection is one which defies gravity – the Elphaba and Glinda figures from the upcoming Wicked film. As someone who has seen the musical in the West End twice, I Iove the story of Wicked and think that this set presents a wonderful opportunity to get a LEGO set from a unique IP. Do I love the design of the brick-built characters? Not really. But I’m willing to overlook that given the fact that this is from an upcoming film based on a fantastic musical. I definitely recommend grabbing this one – I think it has the potential to be a pretty popular set!
The Avengers vs. The Leviathan
Avengers…assemble! It’s no secret to most people within my life that I have always been a huge fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and whilst recent additions to the franchise are certainly very hit-or-miss, the 2012 Avengers film has always been a defining cinematic moment for me. It’s why I was exciting to see a set featuring a different build to the Leviathan featured in Avengers Tower released – giving fans who can’t afford the D2C set a chance to add this iconic creature to their collections. Hulk fighting the Leviathan in the film is an iconic movie moment – and now, thanks to LEGO, that moment comes home.
Knuckles and the Master Emerald Shrine
This set makes it onto this list as it is such a nostalgic throwback, and actually has a really fun build which I think works well within the Sonic The Hedgehog world. I like how this set makes use of all the space available, packing a location under the temple-like structure, and also like how good the Badnik build looks here given the scale at which it is built. This is a wonderful modern take on the Sonic line and something which will work well with the other sets available in the line currently. If you’re a fan of classic Nintendo or Sega, then this is the set for you!
Everyone Is Awesome
The next set is one of my favourite sets LEGO have ever created – the ‘Everyone Is Awesome’ set, which represents the LGBTQIA+. I think LEGO is something which so many of us who identify differently from one another have in common, so I love that LEGO created something which can bring us together to show everyone within our community and society more broadly that they are welcome. The purpose behind this set and the unity it represents makes it a must buy in my opinion – but the cool colours for minifigure parts and the great and colourful rainbow build certainly help, too!
Mini Disney Castle
Following on from one set which is quite literally awesome is another – the Mini Disney Castle. When the D2C Disney Castle originally released, I really wanted it. The Disney Castle is such a piece of iconography within storytelling and so many of the franchises I love, but the D2C was definitely too large to find a home within my collection. This set provides a much more space-friendly option, presenting a model which uses incredibly clever part choices to capture the aesthetic of this iconic location at a much smaller scale. Add in the wonderful Mickey Mouse minifigure you have thrown in here, and this is a wonderful set which I highly recommend.
Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack
Ah, Clone Troopers. The soldiers which represent the Grand Army of the Republic, and my favourite thing to ever come to the Star Wars franchise – Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Being a kid who grew up with Clone Wars on television, it was pretty obvious that this set was going to appear somewhere on this list. I love how this set allows collectors to easily build vast droid and Clone forces quickly – even featuring the Shocktrooper found in the much larger Republic Gunship set. I have one of these sets on my desk – and I think it’s fair to say I’ll be buying quite a few more.
Dinosaur Fossils: T.rex Skull
Last but certainly not least, we had to touch on my favourite franchise – Jurassic World. Recently, we got the release of the first ‘Fossil’ set as a part of the line. The T.rex skull is a wonderful set which uses some innovative building techniques to create the skull of one of the most iconic dinosaurs of all time – and it does it well! I adore this set and think it is a wonderful, unique piece for any dinosaur fan who also loves LEGO. I really hope we are going to see more of these in the future!
That’s it for another blog post – I hope you’ve found this interesting! I really adore how much more focus LEGO are putting on creating unique and aesthetically-appealing products for AFOLs and fans who may want to embrace their LEGO collecting passion in different ways. The advent of new pieces which capture an individual moment or display over a ‘line’ of sets is really nice, and makes collecting much more accessible and inclusive for every type of fan.
