Ain’t no lie, baby bye bye… oh hi, I didn’t see you there! With the recent release of one of the best films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for some time, Deadpool & Wolverine, it feels like a good opportunity to talk about Deadpool LEGO. In this blog post I thought it would be fun for us to look back other where everyone’s favourite loveable rogue has appeared within the LEGO toy-line to date, and also highlight some of the new products which are available from Firestar Toys in the process.
It’s worth addressing the elephant in the room straight away. No, LEGO are not making Deadpool & Wolverine sets – or they aren’t making them yet, at least. With the creation of the Infinity Saga subline for Marvel sets, we have seen that LEGO are not opposed to revisiting older film releases at later dates, but right now there is no talk about Deadpool being in the pipeline for our LEGO collections. Indeed, our mouthy merc appears to be a victim of the increasingly contradictory rules LEGO seem to have around ‘adult’ sets – seeking to not produce sets which are too mature whilst also creating specific adult toy-lines. If it feels like a contradiction, it is. Let’s not get too bogged down by that, however, and let’s start off by taking a look at where Deadpool LEGO sets have been released.
Wolverine’s Chopper Showdown
The last release of a Deadpool LEGO set was all the way back in 2012 – in set 6866-1 Wolverine’s Chopper Showdown. This set came with a black and red helicopter design which was reflective of Deadpool’s design, and also incorporated a grey motorcycle for Wolverine – matching the vehicle which Logan is often seen rocking in both the films and the comic books. Interestingly this set also saw Magneto thrown in for good measure, presumably a step to align this more strongly with the X-Men brand as a whole.
It’s worth noting that this set released three years after X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the first film which featured Deadpool – although his appearance within the film is a far-cry from the red and black colour scheme which people traditionally associate with this character. This set didn’t feel like too much of an anomaly at the time given LEGO would often incorporate other characters into their superhero sets, so it is interestingly seeing how nervous they appear to be to acknowledge the R-Rated side of the franchise today.
SDCC Exclusives
The only other time Deadpool LEGO has appeared on the market was at San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) – where a variant of the character was made available in 2017 and 2018. The 2017 variant was Deadpool Duck – featuring the unique duck head sculpt and a torso print similar to Deadpool from the Chopper Showdown Set.
Sheriff Deadpool is a unique rendition of Deadpool complete with hat and moustache – and interestingly, is an actual character who appears in Deadpool & Wolverine as a part of the Deadpool Corps. A quick google search does show that Deadpool Vol 4 22 features a ‘Sheriff Deadpool’ on the front cover of the comic book, although this is much more of a modern Sheriff appearance for Deadpool.
Sadly, much like many of the LEGO SDCC exclusives which were released, both of these variants go for extreme prices on the aftermarket – meaning most LEGO fans are unlikely to ever add them to their collections. I’ve spoken about it before, but I think the SDCC format is problematic and restricts lots of fans from adding figures to their collections, so I am glad LEGO have moved away from their minifigure exclusives with the modern-day renditions of SDCC Exclusives.
What Is Deadpool Without Logan?
Given the context in which I am writing this article, it would feel remiss of me to not mention Wade Wilson’s current bestfriend – Logan. Whilst Deadpool has become a bit of a rarity within the LEGO line, there is no shortage of Wolverine sets and minifigures out there for you to acquire. In fact, at the time of writing this Wolverine is actively available in one LEGO set as a minifigure, is represented in two other sets, and also has two recently retired products which feature him. It really is just like the film – SO many Logans!!!
If you’re looking to add Wolverine to your collection then you can grab the Adamantium Claws build or the Construction Figure on the LEGO website currently. If you have a little bit more money to splash then you might want to consider the X-Men X-Jet set which is currently available. As a plus for this set you also get Rogue and Cyclops – two X-Men characters who are welcome additions to the line.
If you’re more of a Wolverine-only person then there is a recently released Wolverine Mech Armour set which gives you a decent enough figure of the titular character, or you can still find the LEGO Minifigures Marvel Series 2 version of Wolverine. This figure features the best prints we have ever seen for Wolverine, and is heavily inspired by the popular X-Men ’97 cartoon which recently released on Disney +. Needless to say, if you’re a Logan fan, you have quite a few options available to you!
Where is Wade?
So, we’ve covered the single LEGO Deadpool set which has been released, the couple of variants of Deadpool which LEGO have made, and also the amount of sets which Wolverine has been released in as a comparison. The question for me then becomes – where is Wade?
LEGO have always been funny with their rules about ‘mature’ properties. They seem to have different rules on a license-by-license basis and the lack of consistency can be, frankly, infuriating as a long-term fan. There are so many characters and sets which could be made from the more ‘adult’ themes which LEGO have in their possession, so the reluctance to make sets around them feels like a dis-service to the very collectors who make the company so successful in the first place.
I won’t mince my words – this film has made over $1billion at the box office as of the time of writing this blog post. It has been a huge success – and not having LEGO sets to accompany it feels like a crime.
FirestarToys Alternatives
Luckily the Firestar Toys team have been working on some fantastic alternative LEGO Deadpool products which I think people will really love. At the forefront of this is their gorgeous SH Mouthy Merc – a design which is inspired by the appearance which Wade Wilson has as his first appearance within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Not content with just giving us this, however, the FireStar team have created an awesome pack of alternative heads to give Deadpool the full range of emotions we know and love him for. I was lucky enough to receive both of these items in order to do some photography for this blog post, and I’ll level with you – I love them!
They also have a wide assortment of other Deadpool-inspired products available – including a rather macabre skeletal version of ‘Logan’, some fun variations of Wade Wilson out of his costume, and a whole slew of other products which capture some of the charm and charisma of Deadpool.
Make no mistake – I’m disappointed LEGO chose to omit this film from their official line of products, but I’m so glad that we have products like those on offer from the FST team to make up for it! Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to drool over the final ‘Like a Prayer’ scene again…
