In this blog post I am excited to dive into one of the videogame franchises which shaped a lot of my teenage years – Minecraft. The LEGO Minecraft line initially seemed like it may have been a one-or-two wave ordeal, but many years and sets later, we have received a substantial amount of LEGO based on the Minecraft IP.
Full disclosure, I haven’t bought any of these sets, but there are lots which I think have really cool and unique builds which capture the blocky world of Minecraft perfectly. Minecraft is a game fundamentally built on the idea of building with blocks. LEGO is a towline based on building with bricks. This really is a match made in heaven. Let’s take a closer look at some of my personal highlights!
The Fox Lodge
I always adored seeing people take small-scale items in Minecraft and then recreate them in a larger format in creative mode. It continues to be one of the most unique aspects of playing the game, so I was absolutely delighted to see LEGO embrace this with their build of The Fox Lodge. Retailing for just £17.99 this build turns an absolutely adorable build of a Minecraft fox into a recognisable homestead, suggesting that somebody has been flexing their creative muscles on this world! Sets like this feel like they perfectly emulate the unique creativity which is possible through this game. If I had the space this would be one I’d scoop up sooner rather than later!
The Cherry Blossom Garden
The second smallest set on this list at an RRP of just £22.99 is The Cherry Blossom Garden – a smaller Minecraft set which I love because of the colour palette on show here. Don’t get me wrong, there are not as many interesting elements to this set as there are in some other sets of this line, but I really appreciate how unique the blossom colour is here. I also have to admit I have a soft spot for the adorable bumblebee builds which are included here, with incredibly cute prints on their faces. As a small set which is currently available, this is a nice, unique inclusion to the world of LEGO Minecraft.
The Iron Golem Fortress
It won’t be a surprise that my next pick is another build which feels like it captures some of the unique iconography of the Minecraft world. The Iron Golem Fortress is a much larger set in the Minecraft line, but it captures a gorgeous rendition of a fortress which has been created to resemble an Iron Golem. Not only does this set include the titular character, but it also features a slew of other characters including some unique skeletons on horses.
What I love most here is how the Golem can be separated from the fortress itself, creating a towering titan who is sure to protect you from even the deadliest of mobs. I’ll never forget the intimidation I felt as a kid encountering an Iron Golem in-game for the first time, and this set does a great job of capturing that whilst also embracing the modularity and creativity that a game like Minecraft offers. This undoubtedly earns its place on my list of The Best Minecraft LEGO sets!
The Ender Dragon
We’re venturing from creative sandboxes to end-game territory now, as I thought it would be remiss to create this list without highlighting The Ender Dragon. There are several versions of this behemoth available, but my favourite set has to be 21117. Although I prefer other builds of the dragon itself, I love how this build gives us several elements to build the world of The End. From the beacon towers, to the victory fountain once the dragon is defeated, there are lots of cool world-building elements which I appreciate here.
Throw in a bunch of Ender Men and you have an awesome set which I really enjoy. This set is retired, but the build doesn’t look overly complex, so with the right parts you could definitely recreate this version of The End in your own Minecraft collection, perhaps even substituting the dragon with one of the newer builds which is more widely available.
The Fortress
Another addition to my list of the best Minecraft LEGO sets has to be set 21127 – The Fortress. One of the earlier ‘large’ LEGO Minecraft sets, I love how this is another example of the modularity of Minecraft done well. This set featured multiple builds which you could choose between alongside interchangeable modular elements, allowing you to truly customise your own build. In the early days of Minecraft, castles and fortresses were always fun to construct, so this feels like a fitting homage to them. With a small army of skeletons attacking, it looks like Steve has got his work cut out for him!
The Village
Stumbling across a village in Minecraft is always a treat. Not only do they provide you with opportunities to trade with Villagers, but they also present fantastic opportunities to gather rare resources like Iron, Lava and Books. LEGO’s interpretation of a village has always been a hit with me. Not only is this build able to capture all of the iconic structures which you would expect to encounter in a village, but it also packs in a ton of interesting characters – even managing to include an Iron Golem and an Ender Man.
If you wanted to buy one set that symbolised Minecraft, then I feel like it would have to be this one. There might be other sets that pack in slightly more, but this is certainly a strong contender for one of the best Minecraft LEGO sets.
The Crafting Table
Set number 21265 The Crafting Table is something a bit different. Rather than packing in lots of characters and large-scale buildings, this is a smaller build which aims to capture some of the most iconic parts of Minecraft. I love this one! I like the micro characters included here, and also think that the small build for the world packs in a lot of recognisable biomes and building elements. If you wanted something representative of Minecraft but are low on space, then this is the perfect set for you. As an added bonus, I like the interchangeable printed tiles included here, too – allowing you to really personalise this set!
The Mountain Cave
Last but certainly not least is possibly the largest set on this list, and one which I believe was a direct-to-consumer set – The Mountain Cave. Although this is an admittedly ugly build from the exterior, I love how it is so representative of the core of the Minecraft experience. So much of your time, particularly on survival worlds, is spent digging around in mines. This set captures that experience perfectly. The exterior has a cool system in place for mine carts which proceeds to the interior, where there is some additional detail and plenty of ore for your minifigures to mine.
This set even features smaller details like a mob spawner which are welcome inclusions. Although this may not be the most aesthetically creative Minecraft set is a fantastic representation of the videogame, and for that reason alone, it earns a spot on my list of the best Minecraft LEGO sets.
I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about what I believe are the best Minecraft LEGO sets. Minecraft was such a large part of my childhood and is such a phenomenal game which encourages so much of the same creativity and imagination that LEGO does. This line is an absolute win for The LEGO Group in my opinion, with its modular nature making it easy to connect sets and build an expansive display. If I had room for a ‘LEGO Minecraft World’ in my collection room, you can bet I’d have one!
